Gareth Roberts: The Tories Think They Know What's Best For You

The Tories on Richmond Council are pressing ahead with their undemocratic plans to merge with Wandsworth Council without first consulting Richmond residents.

By the end of the summer an agreement will have been signed which could mean day-to-day decisions affecting Richmond residents being taken by officers in Wandsworth who have no knowledge of, or informed interest in, what is best for this borough.

Leader of the Lib Dem council groups, Cllr Gareth Roberts says “We don’t oppose the idea of sharing services with other boroughs; in fact this already happens with our legal services, education services and waste collection services to name but a few. However, this goes much farther than just sharing services. Under the merger, the Chief Executive will be the Wandsworth Chief Executive. Three of the five directors who report directly to the Chief Executive are Wandsworth directors and the majority of Assistant Directors are Wandsworth employees.  This is looking less like a merger of staff and more like a takeover, with no adequate safeguarding of services for Richmond residents.

To add insult to injury, Wandsworth Council has allowed their residents to have their say in a special consultation yet in spite of repeated requests from Lib Dem opposition councillors, Richmond Tories have always refused to let you have your say.

The question that must be asked – if the Tories are so sure that residents support their plans, why won’t they ask them to support them?  They consult on everything else but they’ve refused all calls to consult on this issue. It’s clear Richmond Tories think that they know best.”
