Lib Dems back funding for legal challenge to Heathrow Expansion

Richmond Lib Dem councillors have backed a joint initiative from Hillingdon, Wandsworth, Windsor & Maidenhead and Richmond Council to launch a legal challenge against the proposed expansion at Heathrow.

At a recent meeting of the full council it was agreed that Richmond Council commit to £50,000 towards a fighting fund; the move was backed by both Liberal Democrat and Conservative Councillors.

At the same meeting it was announced that following an initial approach from leader of Hillingdon Council, Cllr Ray Puddifoot, former Member of Parliament for Richmond Park Zac Goldsmith would be appointed as an unpaid co-ordinator of the campaign.

Speaking after the meeting Gareth Roberts, Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Richmond Council said:

"It was entirely appropriate that both sides of the council should come together to back the fight against Heathrow. This was a fight which started under the Liberal Democrats many decades ago and, unfortunately, owing to the disastrous decision of Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May to green light the expansion it is one we are still fighting.

"It is absolutely vital to the health and wellbeing of local residents that we ensure that we don't allow the expansion to go ahead"

Speaking about Zac Goldsmith's appointment he added:

"Mr Goldsmith will, I'm sure, prove a useful ally in the fight against expansion which will continue on the streets, on the doorsteps and in the elected chambers across the area. It's a fight we will win together."

Zac Goldsmith said:

“The arguments against Heathrow expansion are overwhelming, but alone they aren’t going to win this campaign. I am honoured to have been asked to support their campaign, and will do all I can to ensure we win.”
