Sarah Olney MP announces plans to stand for Liberal Democrat London Mayor selection

Sarah Olney MP has announced that she intends to put herself forward to be the Liberal Democrats’ candidate for Mayor of London in the 2028 London Mayoral election.

The Richmond Park MP made the announcement during an appearance on ITV’s Late Debate, confirming that she is planning to seek the Liberal Democrat nomination.

Sarah said she had been considering the move for some time and believes she can lead an effective campaign that raises the profile of the Liberal Democrats across London.

“I think I have the experience and the profile amongst London’s Liberal Democrats to lead a really effective campaign. I want to use the opportunity to raise the party’s brand identity in London to help our colleagues get elected to positions across the city.”

Sarah also criticised Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan, saying London needs a change of leadership.

“I think that Sadiq Khan has been a disappointment as mayor - he is lacklustre and uninspiring. London needs a change of leadership.”

“The Liberal Democrats are the only party that will offer a challenge to Labour that Londoners can vote for. I want to offer myself to the London membership as the person best placed to spearhead that challenge.”

Sarah has also stressed that her commitment to her constituents in Richmond Park will remain unchanged throughout the selection and mayoral campaigns.

“I will, of course, continue to be the MP for Richmond Park throughout the selection campaign and the subsequent mayoral campaign. My commitment to the constituency remains undimmed.”

Sarah will formally launch her campaign next week, with further details about how Liberal Democrat members and supporters can get involved.
